CSA and ASC Sponsored Short Courses, before the Applied Superconductivity Conference
Sponsored by the Applied Superconductivity Conference, Cryogenic Society of America
The following short courses will take place in conjunction with the Applied Superconductivity Conference. Fees for short courses are non-refundable, and are not included in the Conference registration fee. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. A substitute registrant will be accepted.

    CSA Sponsored Short Courses

    Auxiliary Cryogenic Systems and Components
Morning (Half Day) Short Course: 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Instructor: Tom Peterson, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory
Covering: This short course will focus on some of the special assemblies required in large-scale liquid helium systems which interface to devices being cooled. These special assemblies include test dewars and test stands for large accelerator magnets and RF cavities, and large distribution boxes and transfer lines. Cooling conditions in test dewars and test stands may include 4.5K saturated or subcooled liquid helium, pressurized superfluid, and/or saturated superfluid. “Feed” and “distribution” boxes may include thermal transitions of various kinds, power leads for electric current which now often include high temperature superconductors, instrumentation, vacuum barriers, control valves, relief valves, etc., presenting many unique design problems. Design, procurement and operational experience will be discussed.

Application of Cryocoolers to Superconducting Systems
Afternoon (Half Day) Short Course: 1:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Instructor: Dr. Ray Radebaugh, NIST Boulder
Covering: This short course will review the various types of refrigeration methods currently available to meet the needs of various applications of superconductors. The course is limited primarily to closed-cycle systems, known as cryocoolers, although their use as reliquefiers is also included in the course.
