Sonatrach and Coolergy in Talks to Produce Blue LH2 for Global Supply
Sonatrach, Algeria’s state-owned oil and gas leader, is making strides in the renewable energy sector through a promising discussion with Coolergy S.L., a Spanish engineering company specializing in liquid hydrogen solutions. The meeting, involving Sonatrach’s director for green and renewable energy, Youcef Khanafar, and Coolergy’s CEO, Kirill Lyats, was held at Sonatrach’s headquarters in Algiers.
The discussions centered on the production of blue liquid hydrogen in Algeria, with plans to transport it to Spain. This initiative is part of a broader project by Coolergy S.L., which involves converting up to 1000 refrigerated trucks to operate on liquid hydrogen, thereby significantly reducing their carbon emissions.
Sonatrach, known for its dominance in the oil and gas sector, is the largest company in Africa by economic performance. This venture into blue hydrogen — a type of hydrogen production where the emissions are captured and stored or reused — represents a pivotal shift towards integrating more sustainable practices within its operations.
Coolergy S.L., headquartered in Tres Cantos, Madrid, brings to the table its extensive expertise in designing and constructing cryogenic plants and equipment. The company is at the forefront of developing innovative technologies in the hydrogen sector, making it an ideal partner for Sonatrach’s foray into cleaner hydrogen fuel production.
